The 25th Infantry Regiment was a racially segregated regiment that saw distinguished action during the American Indian Wars, Spanish–American War, Philippine–American War and World War II. Officers and NCOs of the unit would have been a mix racially. Quite positive in his assessment of the 25th as soldiers, Lt Callsen does refer to the organization as ‘Colored’ and ‘Negro’. Dated and rude terms in today’s language, but an official term (United States Colored Troops) during the U.S. Army’s pre-integration period. Fred was a very socially aware person for his time and would have been concerned about anyone taking offense at the dated language. Later, during World War II, he argued that the local schools continue teaching German, despite strong xenophobia against Germans at the time.
